Franklin County Bulldogs give Calcote birthday wins

BUDE – On the day after Brent Calcote’s 31st birthday, theFranklin County Bulldogs gave their head coach a late present bysweeping district 3A rival Jefferson County in blowout fashion. TheBulldogs won 14-2 and 18-2 in two lopsided contests that featuredsenior centerfielder Calvin Robinson producing eight RBIs.
“It was a pair of good wins for our young ball team,” said Calcote.”We’re trying to improve each game.”
Franklin 14, Jefferson 2
The Bulldogs (7-4, 4-0 inside Region 7-3A) never trailed in eithergame. FCHS took a commanding 7-1 lead in the second inning of Game1 and never looked back. Big hits by Austin McFarland, Andy Morris,and Robinson led the Bulldogs.
On the mound, sophomore Hunter Rushing improved to 4-0 overall,striking out five and allowing one hit in the 4-inning feature. Atthe plate, Rushing added two singles.
Robinson, the Bulldogs’ 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior, led all batterswith a double and two singles, plus a stolen base in the contest.McFarland added a double and a single. Morris had twosingles.
Calcote used the fourth inning of the contest to substitute freely.FCHS freshman Derrick Brumfield ended the game by throwing out aJefferson County runner from center field.
Franklin 18, Jefferson 2
The Bulldogs tore out to a 6-0 first inning lead as seniors MiltonGriffin, Preston Shelton, and Justin Smallwood each collected RBIhits. Junior catcher Fred Coleman added a 3-RBI double in the thirdinning to give FCHS a 12-2 advantage.
Robinson had two doubles and a single in the game. Griffin stoletwo bases and collected two singles.
Junior pitcher Kin Mullins collected the victory, striking outfour.
FCHS travels to North Pike Saturday for a 11 a.m. varsity game inSummit. The Bulldogs are 0-2 against the Jaguars thus far thisseason.
