Man dies in fallen tree mishap

While southeastern Lincoln County felt the effects of a nastystorm Monday evening, Copiah County would not escape the windy, wetnight untouched as reports surfaced of multiple trees down and onefatality.
Preston Duane Carlock, 20, of 1001 Hill Place Lane, drove his ChevyAvalanche into a fallen tree on Ruby Road in Crystal Springs around5:50 p.m. Monday, according to Copiah County Coroner EllisStuart.
“It stuck some limbs through the windshield and he was impaled byone of the limbs,” said Stuart. “He was dead on the scene.”
Stringer Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
The inclement weather began between 5 and 5:30 p.m. and cleared thearea around 6:30 p.m. Monday, said Copiah County Civil DefenseDirector Randle Drane.
He mentioned the poor conditions might have been caused by a squallline, the area that runs north and south between a cold front andthe high, and can cause thunderstorms and tornadoes.
However, there has not been any mention of tornadoes thus far inCopiah County.
“No reports of anything like that,” said Drane. “A lot of rain andhigh winds.”
The civil defense director also said a house on West Cayuga Streetin Crystal Springs suffered some minor damage from a fallen treeand 22 trees were reported down as of Tuesday morning.
“It’s sporadic throughout the county,” Drane said. “There’s no onelocation with the trees down.”
