BOGUE CHITTO – The Bogue Chitto Bobcats swept the Weir Lions ina pair of games in the opening round of the MHSAA state baseballplayoffs. Bogue Chitto shutout Weir 6-0 in the first game andcrushed the Lions 10-0 in the nightcap at Stan Long Field.

“We played very good defensive and our pitchers did an outstandingjob on the mound,” said Bogue Chitto coach Jody Britt. “We stillhave got to do a better job at plate offensively to be able toadvance further into the playoffs.”

The Bobcats (19-6, 6-2) will have the week off before returning tothe diamond next Friday, as they prepare to travel to Hattiesburgto battle the Sacred Heart Crusaders. Game time has not beendetermined.

The Lions (5-13, 4-4), coached by Andy Young, has concluded theirseason as the future looks bright for their young players.

Bogue Chitto 6, Weir 0

The Bobcats quickly jumped on the Lions in the second inning tobreak up a scoreless inning by scoring one run. In the fifthinning, Bogue Chitto started to find some rhythm at the plate andthreaten to blow open the game, but Mother Nature had otherplans.

The games were put on hold until the weather cleared out. After therain stopped both coaches talked and elected to keep on going. Thefirst game resumed where it was before the rain started. The delaywas about 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Michael Martin was the winning pitcher for the Bobcats with 10strikeouts and four walks. Relief pitcher Brice Roberts got thesave for Bogue Chitto collecting no strikeouts and no walks.

T.Y. Martin suffered the loss for the Lions with four strikeoutsand three walks.

Zach Avants provided the offensive spark for the Bobcats with adouble and a single. Hitting safely were Kevin Brothern, ColtonMcClendon, Garrett Wallace and Michael Martin.

Weir recorded only two hits for the game, which were singles fromBrady Dewberry and T.Y. Martin.

“I knew what was coming,” said Weir coach Young. “Bogue Chitto hasa very good team. They have some athletic players that can hit andthrow the ball. This was a great learning experience for my playersand I am proud of them for playing hard.”

The Bobcats came out and picked up where they left off from thefirst game as they steamed rolled the Lions in six innings ofwork.

Avants continued the Bobcats’ strong pitching performance as hecollected seven strikeouts and four walks. Dewberry took the lossfor Weir with two strikeouts and seven walks.

Martin was the offensive leader for Bogue Chitto as he crushed atwo run homer in the first inning. Wallace contributed a double anda single. Hunter Ginn belted two singles. Brock Roberts ripped adouble and Brice Roberts hit a single.

Christian Wraggs was the leader for the Lions’ offense with adouble and a single. Tay Edwards and Dewberry hit safely.
