Wolves rally past Baton Rouge

WESSON — The Co-Lin Wolves managed to put together a rally inthe seventh and eighth inning to edge the Baton Rouge CommunityCollege Bears 11-10 in a nine -inning JUCO baseball game Mondaynight on Sullivan Field.
“Baton Rouge has a very good team,” said Co-Lin coach Keith Case.”We had some guys who stepped up in the game and really hit theball well. Overall, this was a very good game.
“It will be very interesting on how we will play against Delgadodue to the fact that we will be operating with a skeleton crew,”continued Case. “We have several players out due to injuries andother players have to get caught up on their school work.”
The Wolves (20-21, 8-14) resume action today, traveling to NewOrleans for an doubleheader against the Delgado Dolphins. Game timeis 4 p.m.
Co-Lin 11, Baton Rouge 10
Co-Lin catcher Kolby Byrd’s solo home run in the second inning putthe Wolves on the scoreboard first. Byrd connected for his secondsolo homerun on the day in the eighth inning to end Co-Lin’sscoring spree as the Wolves held on for the win.
The Bears of Baton Rouge (28-8) answered in the third inning withone run to tie the game, then went on a surge to gain a 9-3 lead inthe top of the seventh.
Co-Lin’s bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh and theWolves rallied, scoring 7 runs, to capture the lead over the Bears10-9. Baton Rouge added one more run in the eighth to tie the gameat 10-all before the Wolves answered in the bottom of theeighth.
Relief pitcher Tyler Copeland collected the win for the Wolves withthree strikeouts and four walks. Devon Whitbey (4K, 4BB) was thestarting pitcher for Co-Lin.
“We did not pitch very well,” continue Case. “We gave up eightfreebies on the night and they managed to score four run off ofthose walks.”
Jordan Calandro, who pitched in relief for the last inning and ahalf, suffered the loss for the Bears with no strikeouts and nowalks. Baton Rouge had four other pitchers that saw some action onthe mound: Jared Belmonte (0K, 3BB) as the starter, DillonRainwater (1K, 1BB), Jacob Gentry (0K, 0BB) and Josh Craft (2K,1BB).
Byrd produced the offensive firepower for the Wolves with two homeruns and a double. Conner Oakes contributed ammunition with adouble and two singles. Jarvis Wilbert smashed two singles. ZacFerguson belted a double. Hitting safely were Bud Britt, WillieBuckley and Dehendret Collins.
A.C. Lawrence was the offensive leader for the Bears with a tripleand a single. Joshua Perez provided a double and a single. JoshCrowdus and Blaine Posey had two singles apiece. Bryce Sibille,T.J. Trantham and Jordan Trosclair hit safely.
