BA boys win 7th straight state title

JACKSON – Brookhaven Academy continues cranking out state tennischampionships. On Wednesday, the Cougars cruised to anunprecedented seventh straight state AA title, directed bysophomores Will Hickman and Alex Gray in No. 1 and No. 2 boyssingles respectively.

The Cougars, coached by David Misner, also got a first place fromDudley Lampton and Myles Melancon in No. 1 doubles. They tacked ona first place finish from Terah Winborne and Jake Shelby in mixeddoubles.

The Cougars claimed 8 of a possible 9 points in the dominatingperformance. Runner-up Yazoo City Manchester managed a pair ofpoints.

Hickman won both of his matches by identical 6-1, 6-0 margins overManchester and Lamar. Gray posted a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins overLamar and Canton.

In No. 1 doubles, Lampton and Melancon beat Simpson’s duo 6-0, 6-1and Kirk’s pair 6-1, 6-0. In mixed doubles Winborne and Shelbyplugged Leake 6-2, 6-2 and Oak Hill of West Point 6-1, 6-0. Mixeddoubles points were divided between the boys and girls in finalstandings.

Coach Misner said Melancon and Lampton have been on all sevenchampionship teams.

“Dudley and Myles were the two pillars on our team for sevenyears,” said Misner. “They provide a lot of leadership off thecourt.

“I’ve been blessed with some good tennis players over theyears.”

The BA girls placed third with 2 points, trailing Manchester andGrenada Kirk who scored 4 points each and shared the top rung.Junior Lindsey Winborne reached he finals where she was a 6-1, 4-6,6-1 winner over West Memphis Christian before losing 6-1, 6-2 toKirk.

In No. 1 doubles, Simpson Academy eliminated BA’s Madison Warrenand Marlee Watts who lost 6-3, 6-1.
