A Brookhaven alderman fears a Halbert Heights Road resident’schicken coop plans could run “a fowl” of neighborhoodsensibilities.

Nathaniel Ludlow, of 612 Halbert Heights Road, appeared at Tuesdaynight’s board meeting to request permission to house more than theallowed two chickens on the property. Ludlow’s initial request wasfor about 12 chicken, but he said last night he was now onlylooking to have about six to eight, which would be in an enclosedrun.

Ward Five Alderman D.W. Maxwell, whose area includes HalbertHeights Road, immediately objected to the proposal. The aldermanpointed out Ludlow’s residence is near Fisher Park and other newhomes in the area.

“We don’t want any chickens over there, not even two for thatmatter,” Maxwell said.

Having small chicken coops in urban settings is part of a new trendin agricultural activities; the chamber of commerce recently hosteda workshop on the idea. Ludlow agreed his interest is a sort of ahobby and for egg production.

Maxwell was not swayed.

“I’m going to get people calling me coming and going if we letchickens over there,” Maxwell said.

The board took the matter under advisement.

In other appearances Tuesday night, Brookhaven Fire Chief TonyWeeks updated city officials on the arrival schedule for hisdepartment’s mobile fire trainer.

Weeks and Mayor Les Bumgarner recently traveled to New Jersey toinspect progress on the training apparatus. Weeks said buildershave some signage and other preparation work to do and the trainingstructure is expected to be ready in about a week or so.

“That thing is everything I thought it’d be and more,” Weekssaid.

The two-story mobile unit will allow training under a number offire-related scenarios. It will be housed at the city’s CentralFire Station, Weeks said.
