The future of the Delphi Packard ElectricSystems plant in Brookhaven appears more secure after a tentativeagreement between management and the local plant’s union has beenreached, sources said.

    Details about the new agreement between Delphi and IUE-CWA Local718 were not available.

    “A tentative agreement was reached and will require approval fromthe local membership and Delphi management,” said DelphiCommunications and Marketing Director Rachelle Valdez.

    Valdez was unable to indicate when a vote by local union membershipwill take place. A source said a vote is scheduled for Tuesday, butother indications were that one could come sooner.

    When contacted Thursday, a local union leader did not confirm anagreement, but acknowledged progress.

    “We did have progress today,” said Chandra Nunnery, president ofDelphi’s union.

    Nunnery declined to elaborate on the progress.

    “We have not made any comments because we believe our fight hasbeen within these four walls,” Nunnery said.

    The current agreement will expire on Oct. 12. It was ratified Aug.5, 2007.

    The Brookhaven plant employs around 250 people. Of those, 140 areassociated with the union.
