Fred Douglas Boyd

Fred Douglas Boyd, 68, a resident ofSummit, died July 2, 2011, at Southwest Mississippi RegionalMedical Center in McComb.

    He was born on March 21, 1943, in Brookhaven and attended publicschools there. He was the son of Kary and Edith Rushing Boyd. Hewas a retired boilermaker and business entrepreneur. He was a U.S.Army veteran.

    He was also a member of the American Legion, Veterans of ForeignWars, Boilermakers Local #582 and the American Quarter HorseAssociation. He was also an original member of the LouisianaAmusement Association.

    Mr. Boyd was well-known throughout south Mississippi and Louisianafor his many business interests. He and his wife lived in BatonRouge and Port Vincent for more than 35 years before moving toMcComb and building Boyd’s Ranch on the Bogue Chitto River outsideof McComb 15 years ago.

    He was the owner of numerous businesses in Louisiana, primarilyAscension Parish. His first was Fred’s on the River. He later addedFred’s Amusements, a number of restaurants, rental properties,Fred’s Travel Centers of Louisiana in St. Gabriel, Prairieville andSt. Francisville and Oakview Auto Auction in Baton Rouge. At Boyd’sRanch, he developed a herd of prized performance quarterhorses.

    He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dan C. Boyd;and a brother-in-law, James “Dopey” Leggett Jr.

    He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Elaine Martin Boyd, ofSummit; one daughter, Cheri Boyd, of McComb; one brother andsister-in-law, Roger C. and Ann Boyd, of Brookhaven; one sister,Shirley Boyd Leggett, of McComb; two grandchildren, BlaiseBercegeay and Shelby Vallet, both of Summit; and a close specialfriend, David Roshto, of Prairieville.

    Visitation is Sunday at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb from5 until 8 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m.with the Rev. Garland Boyd officiating. Burial will be in UnionPrimitive Cemetery in Ruth.

    Pallbearers will be Scott Boyd, Eric Boyd, Ralph Morris, JamieCason, Tommy Miller and Lane O’Quin.

    The family requests memorials be sent to St. Jude Children’sResearch Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
