Two men remained hospitalized at theUniversity of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson after each wasallegedly stabbed Thursday morning by one of their co-workers at aBrookhaven restaurant, officials said.
Sheng Yang, who is in critical condition, and Franscisco VelascoZarate, in good condition, were injured in the incident at Bo BoChinese Buffet, where they are employed.
Zhao Ru Hui, 47, of 35 Allen Street, New York, was identified bywitnesses, also employees at the restaurant, as the assailant, saidBrookhaven Police Chief Pap Henderson. He charged with aggravatedassault and remained in jail Friday morning.
BPD officials’ investigation was hindered Thursday afternoon by alanguage barrier that exists between the employees andauthorities.
Efforts to coordinate with a certified translator all day Thursdayand Friday morning have been successful, according to DistrictAttorney Dee Bates. Bates said that authorities are coordinating with a professor fromthe University of Mississippi to come to Brookhaven wheninvestigators interview Zhao, who speaks Mandarin. That could comeas soon as Friday afternoon.
“This afternoon is just an estimate because he [the translator] isa professor and has classes to work around,” Bates said Fridaymorning.
Bates said that whenever a translator is required, it makes theinterviewing process lengthier.
After the coordination with the translator is done and theinterview begins, everything that is said has to be said at leasttwice. It is also important to make certain that nothing gets lostin translation, Bates said.
Bo Bo was closed for the rest of the day Thursday. Calls to therestaurant Friday morning were not answered.
Authorities said there was an apparent altercation between Zhao andthe others in the kitchen area of the restaurant. Zarate wasstabbed once in the left forearm, and Sheng was struck three times:once in the left and right sides of the torso and once in theback.
Sheng was airlifted to UMC while Zarate was transported byambulance.
