Construction on a new men’s dormitory onCopiah-Lincoln Community College’s Wesson campus is on track forcompletion in late fall, according to college officials.
Natalie Davis, the college’s director of public information, saidthe 18,724-sq. ft. facility should be complete by mid-October.
“The project appears to be on schedule,” she said. “Constructionworkers have been working diligently on weekends and everyweekday.”
Davis said the $3.2 million facility, which was funded throughstate bond money, will house male honor students and should see itsfirst residents move in during the 2012 spring semester.
“We’re planning for it to be ready by the spring,” she said.
The two-story dormitory, which is being built near the Franklin andSimpson dormitories and is the first sight after crossing over thebridge entering the campus, has 28 rooms and will be the home of 56residents, said Davis.
“It’ll be suite-style living,” she said, adding that each suite hasa private bathroom and will cost $800 per student eachsemester.
Davis said the new dormitory, which has yet to be named, would helpto replace the ailing Ellzey Hall, which has served the college asa men’s dormitory for 83 years.
“We’re retiring Ellzey as a dormitory, and we’re not sure yet ofits future,” she said.
The old dormitory will most likely end up as a multi-use building, said Davis.
“We’ve had some architects to come look at it, and we’re looking atour options,” she said.
Davis said there would be some reshuffling of male students on thecampus to accommodate the eventual retirement of Ellzey Hall andthe addition of 56 more living spaces.
“We’re going to be moving people around to make it work,” shesaid.
The new dormitory is being constructed by Coleman HammonsConstruction, of Pearl, and will be a proud addition to theever-growing college, said Davis.
“We’re excited,” she said. “The new dormitory is much needed.”
