Nicholas Getwan, 97, of Elkhorn, Neb., wentto be with the Lord Aug. 8, 2011.

     Nick was born to the lateFred and Catherine Getwan June 29, 1914, in Chicago, Ill. Nickgraduated from Brookhaven High School in 1931 then joined the U.S.Marine Corps in 1934. While in the Marines, he served during WorldWar II in the 22nd Marine Battalion. Nick loved his country andgave 40 years of service before retiring as a lieutenant colonel inthe Marine Corps Reserves. He was very proud to serve his countryand enjoyed sharing many stories of his tenure with family andfriends.

     He married Frances Getwanin 1946. They lived the majority of their marriage in Columbuswhere they reared their family, made memories and retired beforemoving to Elkhorn, Neb.

     Nick worked for UnitedTechnologies (UT) as a product reliability engineer, until heretired in 1978. Nick enjoyed his employment at UT and made manylifelong friends. Nick’s passion was fishing. Upon retiring hespent time with his family and hosted numerous fish frys with hisclosest friends. Nick was known for his fish-fry cuisine. When hewasn’t fishing he enjoyed gardening and volunteering at thechurch.

     Nick was an active memberof Annunciation Catholic Church in Columbus.

     Nick is survived by hisloving wife, Frances, of Elkhorn; his son, Nick (Ann) ofGardendale, Ala.; daughters, Mary (Jeff) Eddy, of Elkhorn, and Ann(Hal) White, of Jackson; his five grandchildren, Stefanie (Brian)Mull, Brandi (P.J.) Lee, Taylor White, Ashley and Nicholas Getwan;and four great-grandchildren, Makenna, Peyton and Beckett Mull, andRivers Lee; two sisters, Mary Ratliff and Margaret Barrett, both ofBrookhaven; numerous nieces; and nephews.

     Pallbearers include BrianMull, Davy Ratliff, James Barrett, Matt Jackson, P.J. Lee andTaylor White.

     Services and burial willbe held in Brookhaven on Saturday, Aug. 12. Visitation will be atthe Brookhaven Funeral Home on North Jackson Street from 9 until 11a.m. The funeral follow at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at11:30 a.m. Burial will be at the Catholic Cemetery.

     In lieu of flowers,memorials can be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
