WESSON – Co-Lin head football coach GlennDavis and his staff reviewed, broke down game film and shared theresults with members of the Wolfpack football team Sunday nightafter Picture Day in Stone Stadium. Saturday’s scrimmage featured70 plays as team members competed on offense and defense.

    “It was good to see them compete,” said Davis. “We have a lot ofyoung freshmen playing this year.”

    Davis said the scrimmage included situations like red zone offenseand defense. All aspects of the kicking game were reviewed,too.

    Co-Lin has a new punter and placekicker this season in Nolan Longof Ackerman. Davis said Long showed a strong leg, especially onpunts.

    Several players on the defensive side of the football receivedspecial praise from Davis. He said defensive end Jerrell Jordan ofAlta Vista, Va. had done well. Defensive tackles Jordan Black ofValdosta, Ga. and Derrick Billups of Alliceville, Ala., assertedthemselves up front and outside linebacker Tevin Thomas ofMeadville made some strong plays.

    On offense, sophomore running back Joel Davis  of Natchez made several strong runsas did Danny Hobbs of Mendenhall. Freshman quarterbacks ChandlerRogers of Brookhaven and Darren Anderson of Bastrop, La. displayedpotential.

    “We used the quick-whistle on our running backs because we knowwhat they can do,” explained Davis.,

    Anderson, also a receiver in the scrimmage, caught a post pass fromRogers for a touchdown. Devonte Scott caught a TD pass fromAnderson.

    Davis said both quarterbacks have sore arms. “Their arms are tired.Chandler was throwing high. We got his left hand to push his(right) arm further back and that helped his accuracy.”

    One of Co-Lin’s main concerns is the offensive line that was hithard by graduation after helping lead the Wolfpack to the SouthDivision championship and a runners-up finish in the stateplayoffs.

    “Our offensive line must get better,” said Davis. “We lost four outof the five linemen from last year. And a couple of our linemenhave been hurt.”

    Davis said returning offensive guard Fred Tillman of Bogue Chittoelected to give up football. Tillman made the decision prior totwo-a-day workouts. A redshirt sophomore, Tillman plans to enrollat Southern Miss and continue his college education, according toDavis.

    The lone veteran in the line is guard Josh Young of Starkville.

    Several local players who are incoming freshmen have made an impactduring preseason practice. Davis said Sam Ballard of Brookhaven haslanded the starting job at center. “Sam has been a pleasantsurprise.”

    Other local players seeing action are wide receivers Marquis Hayesof Loyd Star and Duwone Harris and Trent Powell of Brookhaven.Shamonte Brooks and Devonte Stewart of Brookhaven are working atdefensive back. Stewart has been slowed by knee and shoulderinjuries.

    Davis said defensive tackle Jawaun Merchant of Brookhaven isdealing with heat problems in preseason drills. Tevin Tobias ofBogue Chitto has done well as a long snapper. Davissaid  offensive linemanBuck Lewis, a freshman from Bogue Chitto, hastransferred  from AlcornState.

    Davis said the Co-Lin roster must be reduced to 55 players, plus 10practice squad members before the first game.

    Co-Lin is scheduled to scrimmage Belhaven College Friday inJackson. The Pack’s first game of the 2011 campaign is Thursday,Sept. 1, at Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale.
