Sibyl B. Smith, 91, of Brookhaven, diedAug. 30, 2011, at her son’s home in Sugar Land, Texas. A native ofSumter, S.C., she met and married J.K. Smith, of Brookhaven, duringWorld War II at Shaw Field Air Base near Sumter. They moved toBrookhaven after the war where J.K. was a barber on Main Street formore than 50 years, while Sibyl worked for Sears and Roebuck for 35years. They raised two sons Wenzel and Wayne. After suffering astroke in September of 2010 she moved to Sugar Land to be with herson, Wayne, after having lived in Brookhaven for 68 years.
During her life in Brookhaven she was known for her service toothers: serving as room mother, den mother, PTA president, BandBooster Club president, State DeMoley Mother and vice president ofthe Rosecraft Garden Club. Sibyl was an active member of the Orderof the Eastern Star for 60 years and taught a Sunday school at theFirst Baptist Church of Brookhaven for 50 years.
Preceding her in death are two sisters and a brother, all of SouthCarolina; her husband, J.K.; and her eldest son, Wenzel.
She is survived by her son, Wayne Smith and his wife, Evelyn, ofSugar Land; three grandsons, Dr. Carter Smith and his wife, Carie,and great-grandson, Larson, of Madison, Wis., Taylor Smith and hiswife, Renata, of Sugar Land, and Hunter Smith, of Austin,Texas.
Viewing will be at the Brookhaven Funeral Home, North JacksonStreet, on Saturday, Sept. 3, from 6 until 8 p.m. Services will beSunday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with theRev. Greg Warnock presiding followed by burial at EasthavenCemetery. Brookhaven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
