School gymnasiums targeted for upgrades

The Lincoln County School Board met Tuesday night to discuss anumber of routine items from personnel to financial matters.
The board also heard from Superintendent Terry Brister, in hisregular report to the board, about the state of two projects in thedistrict that will yield two new gym facilities at differentlocations.
He said architects, from Pryor & Morrow in North Mississippi,are through with their plans and ready to move forward.
The projects are located at Bogue Chitto and Enterprise AttendanceCenters. The board gave permission for bids to open on Aug. 1, andthere will be no real estimate as to the cost of the facilitiesuntil bidding opens.
At Bogue Chitto, Brister said building experts agreed the currentfacility was too far beyond salvaging for remodel.
Brister said the underground of the building was nearly gone, so inaddition to an entirely new gymnasium, the current gym buildingwill be torn down to make way for new classrooms.
“Everybody should be happy with this,” Brister said. “We’re notdoing anything more for athletics than we’re doing for academics.We’re building and fixing what somebody needs.”
At Enterprise, Brister said the current cafeteria building will bedemolished to build a new gym, and that the current gym facilitieswill be remodeled to become the new cafeteria.
“This is a vision for the future,” he said. “We’re not just goingin and dabbing a building down.”
Brister mentioned that once these projects get started, that plansfor Loyd Star will start.
“We want to revamp the whole gym and make it fancy,” he said.
He also mentioned paving the lot out front early for easier accessto sporting events.
Brister also explained no money is being taken away from teachers’salaries for the new facilities.
“This is being done for the children, your children, yourgrandchildren and mine,” he said.
In other matters, the board approved the revision of salaries forthree teachers whose teaching licenses were upgraded from A toAA.
They also approved the transfer of $5,000 of activity funds tooffset budgets at schools around the district.
They approved Pryor & Morrow the use of funds to run water-flowtests for the new gyms at Bogue Chitto and Enterprise. The testswill cost $800 a piece.
The next school board meeting is set for Sept. 19 at the district’scentral office.
