German leads Pearl River over Co-Lin

POPLARVILLE – All-American quarterbackMelvin German passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to leadthe No. 15 ranked Pearl River Wildcats to a 26-5 victory over theCo-Lin Wolfpack in a South Division matchup. The Wildcats improveto 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the South Division. The Wolfpack drops to3-3 overall and 1-3 in the division.

    The Wildcats took the lead when German hit Jonathan Duncan with a5-yard touchdown pass with 5:20 left in the first quarter cappingoff a 77-yard drive. Caleb Kergosien added the PAT to give PearlRiver a 7-0 lead.

    Co-Lin got on the board with 14:04 remaining in the second quarterwhen Nolan Long hit on a 17-yard field goal to pull the Wolfpack to7-3.

    Danny Hobbs gave the Wolfpack excellent field position to start thesecond half returning the kick off to the Pearl River 27-yard line.Joel Davis got loose for a 21-yard scamper down to the Wildcat 6yard line, but the ball was knocked out of his hands and wasrecovered by Pearl River’s E. J. Pearson at the 16.

    The Wolfpack defense forced the Wildcats to punt deep in their ownterritory. Co-Lin’s Lance Daniels blocked the punt that went out ofthe back of the end zone for a safety pulling the Wolfpack to7-5.

    Pearl River capped a 70-yard drive as Marcus Smith ran in for thetouchdown from 2 yards out with 7:37 left in the quarter.Kergosien’s PAT was blocked, but the Wildcats lead increased to13-5.

    The Wolfpack drove the ball down to the Pearl River 7-yard line butthe drive stalled. On the ensuing Nolan Long field goal attempt,the Wildcat defense was called for roughing the kicker givingCo-Lin a first and goal from the Pearl River 2. Hobbs took thehandoff but fumbled the ball into the end zone and was recovered bythe Wildcats. 

    With 13:40 left in the fourth quarter German ran up the middle fromthe 1-yard line to put the Wildcats up 19-5. Kergosien missed thePAT.

    Co-Lin had another opportunity deep in Pearl River territory asdefensive end Jordan Black recovered a fumble at the Wildcat29.

    Rogers hit Alonzo Lewis with a 14-yard pass, but the play wascalled back on a holding penalty. On the next play Davis picked up12 yards, down to the Pearl River 15 yard line. The Wildcats werecalled for a pass interference penalty on the next play giving theWolfpack first and goal from the 7. Rogers was sacked for a lossback to the 18-yard line. On second down, Rogers hit Lewis on apass down to the 12. Rogers took another sack back at the 18-yardline on third down.  Co-Lindecided to go for it on fourth and goal but Rogers’ pass was caughtout of bounds in the end zone ending the drive.

    The Wildcats final score of the game came at the 2:20 mark asGerman hit Larry Thompson on a 2-yard pass. Kergosien’s PAT wasgood giving Pearl River a 26-5 win.

    Co-Lin had 300 yards in total offense. Rogers completed 8-of-21passes for 115 yards. Hobbs, a sophomore from Prentiss, rushed for82 yards and caught three passes for 43 yards. Davis had 14 carriesfor 80 yards.

    Pearl River racked up 422 yards in total offense. German, asophomore from Ft. Myers, Fla., passed to 10 different receiverscompleting 24-of-37 passes for 271 yards. Smith led the Wildcatrushing attack with 8 carries for 57 yards.

    Co-Lin will celebrate homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 15, against theMississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.
