WESSON – Quarterback Jacob Fischer heard itfrom his Wesson classmates all week. “Beat Loyd Star!”

    Fischer and his teammates dominated archrival Loyd Star Fridaynight, roaring to a 34-6 triumph. Fischer passed for one touchdownand ran for two more in the lopsided win in Stone Stadium.

    “(Classmates) were pushing us,” said Fischer. “Our offensive lineblocked well and our backs were tremendous.”

    Wesson raised its record to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the Region 6-2Arace, winning a second straight game. Loyd Star (1-6, 0-2) waslimited to 87 yards total offense and trailed 34-zip with 4:31 leftin the third quarter.

    With the victory secured, Wesson coach Tommy Clopton beganwholesale substitutions. Fischer and his starting teammates becamecheerleaders for the rest of the game.

    Loyd Star was derailed by a series of first-half turnovers, losingtwo, first-quarter fumbles that led to easy Wesson touchdowns andthen a second quarter interception that set up the fourth TD.

    “We wanted to come out here and drive it straight at them,” saidFischer. Wesson’s Quinten Lindsey recovered a fumble by Hornetquarterback Seth Farmer at the Loyd Star 41 and returned it 3 yardson the first series of the game.

    That launched a 6-play, 62-yard scoring march. Austin Grahamplunged the final 3 yards over left tackle, added the extra pointkick and it was 7-0. Graham kicked 4 PAT’s and rushed 22 times for100 yards.

    The next Hornet fumble was returned 49 yards for a score by PaytonCupit but the TD was canceled by a 10-yard, blocking-in-the-backpenalty, setting up the Cobras at Loyd Star’s 26. On the sixthplay, Fischer scored on a 2-yard sneak and it was 14-0.

    Fischer hooked up with Paxton Cupit on 37-yard pass to the Hornets’7-yard line. Fischer scored on another sneak and it was 21-0 with1:36 left in the first half.

    Misfortune continued to shadow the Hornets on the next series.Fischer intercepted Farmer near midfield and returned it to the LS11-yard line. On second down, Fischer rolled right and hit PaxtonCupit with a 7-yard TD strike. Only 32 seconds remained in thefirst half.

    “That pick (interception) by Fischer and the touchdown before thehalf really put it away,” said Clopton. “I told our kids we reallyneeded to come out there and get after them early. We createdturnovers and had a short field.”

    In the fourth quarter, Loyd Star finally got a break when a Wessonpunt went 16 yards and died at Wesson’s 33. The Hornets got a16-yard completion from Farmer to Josh Butler at Wesson’s 4-yardline. Two plays later, Marquis Sims plunged the final yard topaydirt, avoiding a shutout.

    “The turnovers killed us,” said Loyd Star coach Randall Huffman.”We gave them a short field. You can’t do that and expect to win.Wesson did an outstanding job.”

    On defense, Derrick Lyles led Wesson with 9 tackles and a fumblerecovery. Payton Cupit had 7 tackles and a fumble recovery. NickLewis and Cullen Greer each made 5 tackles and Greer recovered afumble.

 

    It was Wesson’s second straight win over Loyd Star. The Cobras areat Enterprise and the Hornets host Puckett for Friday night regionaction.
