Hornets sting Enterprise

Senior running backs Josh Butler andMarquis Sims showcased their brute speed as they combined to scorefive touchdowns for Loyd Star. The Hornets ruled supreme in the2011 Sting Bowl by blanking their rivals, the Enterprise YellowJackets, 43-0 Friday night in Region 6-2A football action on HarryCole Field. With the win, Loyd Star snapped a 4-game losingstreak.

    “It feels great to get the win,” said Loyd Star coach RandallHuffman. “Overall, I was very pleased with our team’s effort. Theguys played really hard on all three phrase of the game to get theshutout.”

    Loyd Star (2-7, 1-3) came out of the gates on fire as they captureda 29-0 lead in the first quarter

    In the first quarter, sophomore Rictavious Butler started theHornets scoring spree on the opening kickoff as he sprinted 68yards to paydirt with 11:47 remaining. Cori Crowe was five-for-sixon the extra points for the night.

    Sims punched in two straight touchdowns for the Hornets as hegalloped 34 yards with 7:15 left and made a 66-yard sprint with2:19 remaining.

    The Hornets’ special team managed to get in the action also as theyforced the Jackets to punt the ball and gained a safety on a badsnap with 26 seconds left.

    On the ensuing free kick, Loyd Star cashed in another scored justbefore the first quarter ended as Josh Butler burst through theEnterprise defense for 27-yard a touchdown with :03 remaining.

    In the second quarter, Coach Huffman started to pull back on thereins of the speedy Hornets to give his younger talent some playingtime.

    Butler added another scored for Loyd Star with 28-yard sprint topaydirt with 8:51 remaining. The Hornets commanded a 36-0 lead intohalftime over the host Enterprise (1-9, 0-4), which had fourturnovers.

    In the second half, football fans witnessed the young talent fromboth schools perform as they battled to a stalemate in the thirdquarter.

    Enterprise managed to gain some positive results in the second halfas they controlled the clock against the Hornets and came close tobreaking up the scoreless game on many occasions, but stalled asLoyd Star’s defense tightened up in the red zone.

    In the fourth quarter, the Hornets cashed in their final points ofthe game as Butler collected his third touchdown on 46-yardgalloped with 9:43 remaining.

    “We are a very young team going through some growing pains,” saidEnterprise coach Casey Eubanks. “We did manage to sustain some longdrives in the game but stalled when we got in the red zone. LoydStar did a great job on executing their game plan against us.”

    Sophomore Jackson Cole led the Jackets offense by completing8-of-21 passes for 90 yards and an interception. Lance Spring wasthe top receiver for Enterprise with 4 catches for 57 yards. DylanSmith contributed 2 catches for 31 yards. Logan Killingsworth ledthe ground attack with 12 rushes for 34 yards.

    Defensively, Matt Greer was the leader for the Jackets with 5tackles and recovered a fumble. Taylor Rutland provided 4stops.

    The Loyd Star’s defense forced 4 turnovers as Jake Case, BrandenCanny and Logan Smith recovered a fumble apiece. Bradley Archerintercepted a pass.
