WESSON – Running back Steve Jones had acareer game for the Wesson Cobras Friday night and that efforthelped his team secure second place in the Region 6-2A standings.Jones rushed 23 times for 253 yards and three touchdowns in leadingWesson to a 47-21 road win against the Puckett Wolves.

    That performance  hasearned Jones The DAILY LEADER’s Offensive Player of the Weekhonors.

    Wesson head coach Tommy Clopton praised the performance by Jones ina must-win situation. “Steve did a great job of finishing his runsand our offensive line did a great job of staying on theblocks.

    “Steve has a good eye for seeing the hole,” Clopton continued. “Hehas great balance and is able to make sideways cuts. He also has astrong desire to be a good back.”

    On the season, Jones has nearly 1,100 yards rushing. Standing5-foot-5 and weighing 150 pounds, Jones plays much larger than hisphysical dimensions.

     He is the 18-year-old sonof Tommy Jones and Cassandra Smith. He has one sister and twobrothers: Tamisha Jones, 19; Jarvis Williams, 19; and James Jones,6.

    Jones said his offensive line gave him some good holes to runthrough against Puckett. “They were blocking good for me Fridaynight.”

     Wesson’s offensive lineincludes Tyler Hall, Corey McPherson, Alex Berry, Zach Wilson,Derrick Lyles, Ryan Spear and Cullen Greer. Jones scored histouchdowns on runs of 36, 2 and 13 yards.

    Wesson (5-5, 4-1) has played a difficult schedule this season. TheCobras lost some close games but they continued improving. Theironly region loss was 24-20 to region champion Madison St.Joseph.

    “I think we are doing pretty good,” said Jones. “We knew Puckettplayed hard, so we played hard, too.”

    He said Wesson’s coaching staff prepares the team well for eachgame. “Our coaches are smart. They call the right plays.” Hisfavorite play is 24 seal.

    Asked about Wesson’s chances in the state playoffs that beginFriday, Jones said, “I think we have a pretty good chance in theplayoffs. I think we can beat North Forrest.”

    Kickoff is 7 p.m. Friday night in Co-Lin’s Stone Stadium.

    Looking to the future, Jones said he plans to attend Co-Lin. He isleaning towards a career in construction.

     His father drives an18-wheeler. Jones said, “He tries to make most of my ballgames.”

    Jones, who wears jersey No. 7, is strong and fast for his size. Heruns a 4.6 in the 40-yard dash. He bench presses 220 pounds in theweight room and squats with 345. He said, “My strong legs help merun better.”

    In his spare time, Jones enjoys hunting and fishing. He likes towatch the Southern Miss Golden Eagles whenever he has anopportunity to see them play.
