Loyd Star boys, Bogue Chitto girls notch wins

The Loyd Star boys and Bogue Chitto girlscame away happy after Tuesday night’s Lincoln County showdown inLoyd Star’s gymnasium. The Lady Cats were 39-34 winners over LoydStar but the Hornetsrallied past BC’s boys 46-41.
Loyd Star hosts St. Andrew’s for four games Thursday, starting withJV girls action at 4 p.m. Bogue Chitto hosts Florence Thursdaynight in the opening round of the Bogue Chitto Tournament in R.L.”Bob” Calhoun Gymnasium.
The Lady Hornets (4-1) suffered their firstloss, despite a 24-point, 18-rebound performance by All-Countysenior center Tyrisha Patterson.
“We didn’t hit some shots that we have been hitting,” said LoydStar coach Billy Vaughn. “Hopefully, we can learn from this.”
On the boards, Loyd Star’s Melody Smith had 7 boards and MaggieRedd six before foulingout with two minutes left in the game. Patterson had 3 steals and 2blocked shots. Smith had 3assists and Marcie Givens 3.
The Lady Cats (2-0), coached by Christi Terrell, are in a majorrebuilding year after a Class 1A state tournament appearance. Theygot 17 points from Earlneshia Dillon and 9 from AdrienneWallace.
“I thought my girls hustled and played hard,” said Terrell. “Weplayed better the second half. We have to cut down on turnovers andmake our free throws.”
Marshonikique Blackwell led BC on the backboards with 10 rebounds.Wallace made 6 steals. Mattie Avants made 8 assists.
The Hornets (3-2) led 25-22 at halftime and erased BC’s 34-33 leadstarting the fourth quarter. Terion Williams scored 12 points andJarred Bullock 10 to pace the win.
On the backboards, Williams had 8 rebounds and Bullock 5. DonovanJohnson made 4 assists. Bullock had 5 steals and Caleb Yarborough3.
“We played probably one of our better games,” said Coach Gene(Moochie) Britt. “We executed on offense and hustled ondefense.”
Bogue Chitto’s Frank Thigpen scored 15 points and led all scorers.Zachary Perkins added 11 points.
First-year coach Jimmie Butler watched his young team continue toshow improvement. The Bobcats only have one senior on the squad in Michael Harris.
In junior high action, Loyd Star beat the Bobcats 48-22 as LeviRedd pumped in 18 points. Brad Jasper added 6 points and LaneRogers 5. Gregory Hooks netted 4 points for the 8-0 Hornets.
Bogue Chitto got 10 pointsfrom Brandon Blackwell. Dylan Fry had 7 points.
Loyd Star’s girls (7-1) beat Bogue Chitto 32-27 in the junior highgame, paced by Ali Gartman’s 13 points. Julie Smith added 8 pointsand Jordan Shelby 6.
Zariah Matthews scored 13 for BC and Christian Black netted 12.
