MONTICELLO -Brookhaven, Enterprise, andWayne County were big winners in boys basketball action Monday inthe Cougar Classic at Lawrence County High School.  Enterprise opened boys’ play with arousing 67-59 overtime thriller over Puckett.

      Later in the day, the OleBrook Panthers hammered Mendenhall by an 84-51 score.  In the last of 8 games, 5A powerhouseWayne County ripped the Lawrence County Cougars  85-48.

Brookhaven 84, Mendenhall51

    Coach Preston Wilson’s Brookhaven Panthers rolled to a 53-23halftime lead, in blowing out the Mendenhall Tigers.  Alvin Franklin had a huge night,burning the nets for 28 points, 21 of them in the firsthalf.  Ross Hill netteddouble figures with 10. Khalil Newton, Fred Trevillion, and Ryan Thibodeaux each scored 9points. 

    “It was a good night for us,” said Wilson, whose Panthers improvedto 6-2.  “We brought a lotof positive energy tonight, and because of that, a lot of guys wereable to get quality minutes.  It was a good game.”

    Mendenhall was led by D.J. Warren, who scored 14points.  Kadarrell Hodgesadded 12.

Enterprise 67, Puckett59

    The best game of the day was the boys’ contest between Enterpriseand Puckett.  Enterpriseled by 9, at 50-41, with three minutes left inregulation.  But Puckettbattled back to tie it, knotting the game on Kevin Perry’sold-fashioned 3-point play with 1 second left on theclock. 

    Undaunted by the heartbreaking end to regulation, the YellowJackets dominated the overtime period, outscoring Puckett14-6.  Travis Ham scored 10of his 12 points in overtime, plus 10 rebounds.

      Grant Brister led theJackets with 15 points and 8 rebounds.  Lance Spring added 14.  Ham and Tanner Allen each had12. 

    John Knight’s Enterprise team improved to 4-2 on the youngseason. 

    For Puckett, Willie Bailey had 19 points, and Hakeem Garr added15.

Wayne 85, Lawrence 48

    The final game of the night pitted undefeated 5A powerhouse WayneCounty against the host Cougars, who entered with a formidable 5-1record of their own.  Itturned out to be not much of a game, at least for LawrenceCounty.  Thelightning-quick War Eagles jumped to a 21-13 first quarter lead,then blew the game wide open in the second quarter. 

    Five different War Eagles scored in double figures, led by AlphonzoSmith, who had 14 points. RaeFord Worsham added 13. Raymel Everett and Avery Woodson each tallied 11. 

    Carlton Martin and David Haynes had 12 points each for Pat Bridges’Cougars, who fell to 5-2. Wayne County improved to 5-0.

    A full day of tournament action is slated for Tuesday aswell.  Games got underwayat 10 a.m., with Loyd Star taking on Puckett in girls’action.  Boys’ and girls’games between Brookhaven and Lawrence County will close out thetournament tonight at   7and 8:30.
