West Lincoln flexes basketball muscles against St. Al

West Lincoln began the 2012 portion of itsbasketball campaign on a winning note Tuesday night in Jack CaseGymnasium, sweeping the Vicksburg St. Aloysius teams in Region 7-1Aaction. The Lady Bearsnotched their second win of the season as senior guard MarisaPruski pumped in 14 points in the 55-31 triumph.
In the varsity boys’ game, West Lincoln blitzed St. Al’s Flashes97-46. Lucas Burris and Darius Clark scored 18 points each for theBears. LeKeith Ward netted 14 points, De Price 11 and DuaneMarshall 10.
West Lincoln continues Region 7-1A play Friday night, hostingnewcomer Hinds AHS. Varsity girls’ action begins at 6 p.m.
The Lady Bears (2-13, 1-1) overpowered the young St. Al squad. Heather Moak tossed in 10points and Tamasha Buckleyadded 8, sparking the Lady Bears to a 33-6 halftime lead.
“Our girls got after it and scrapped pretty good,” said WestLincoln coach Lane Young.
St. Al (4-8, 0-2), under the direction of first-year coach CookieJohnson, got 15 points from freshman guard Alli Willis. The LadyFlashes had 18 turnovers.
The Bears (13-3, 1-1), seeing their first action since a region61-52 loss Dec. 16, to powerhouse Piney Wood, flexed theirbasketball muscles. Burris started the contest with a 2-handed slamdunk off the opening tip. Burris, a strong 6-foot-4 junior, had a2-handed reverse dunk to make the score 60-30 with 5:20 left in thethird quarter. He also had6 rebounds.
Coach Young substituted early and often. Burris had 14,first-quarter points. Clark contributed 7 rebounds and 4 steals.Jared Case had 7 rebounds and Marshall made 9 assists. Sam Bivensblocked 5 shots.
“Our boys got out front early,” said Young. “Our defensive pressurewas too much for (Flashes) to handle.”
The Flashes (1-11, 0-2) were no match for West Lincoln’s size,quickness and physical strength. They got a game-high 25 pointsfrom Elliot Bexley, plus 6 rebounds.
St. Al coach Delvin Thompson ordered his team to freeze the ballduring the final 2 minutes in an effort to keep the Bears fromachieving the 100-point plateau. The Flashes trailed 77-41 entering thefourth quarter.
