BA boys claim South AA; BA girls win consolation

MENDENHALL — Gage Posey pumped in 19points and the Brookhaven Academy Cougars hustled to a 62-49Saturday night victory over the Central Private Rebels in the MAISClass AA South State Tournament Championship game. Brock Smith andBrennan Miller joined Posey in double digits with 18 and15  points respectively ina showdown staged in the tight confines of the Simpson Academygymnasium

    In Saturday’s girls consolation game, Brookhaven Academy blew outthe ACCS Lady Rebels 68-42.

    Both Brookhaven Academy teams have qualified for the State AATournament that begins Tuesday at Grenada Kirk Academy.

    The Cougars (30-3) play Leake Academy, the No. 4 team out of theNorth, either Tuesday or Wednesday. Brackets will posted on theMAIS website Sunday afternoon.

    The Lady Cougars (30-6) play North Delta, either Tuesday orWednesday. North Delta was the North runner-up to Leake.

BA 68, ACCS 42

    Directed by senior guard Terah Winborne’s game-high 37 points, theLady Cougars came out strong against Adams County Christian Schooland were never challenged in Saturday’s consolation game. They led46-29 at halftime and 68-35 starting the fourth frame. BA coachGinger Duease began liberal substitutions and her team wentscoreless in the last 8 minutes of action.

    On the backboards, Laura Beth Wright had 14 points and 10 rebounds.Mary Jordan had 10 rebounds and Winborne 8. Madison Warren grabbed6 rebounds.

    Winborne also made 7 steals and 4 assists. She had 28 points athalftime.

    “We picked up our defensive pressure and Winborne played well,”said Duease. “Our defense was the key.”

    Duease said starting center Carey Crozier was kept on the sidelinesas she recovered from a head injury sustained last Wednesday duringpractice. Crozier is expected to play in the state tournament.

    Winborne and Wright were named to the South All-TournamentTeam.

BA 62, CP 49

    On the backboards, Miller grabbed 9 rebounds and Brock Smith 8.Posey had 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Smith and Bubba Keene each had2 steals.

    “Our guys did a great job,” said BA Coach Dale Watts. “CentralPrivate is a super-talented team that plays above the rim. Theyhave four guys who are going to play college basketball.

    “We worked on controlling the tempo and extending the floor,” Wattspointed out. “The big thing is pass and catch. We were running ourPrinceton offense and our kids did a good job.”

    Watts said beating Central Private was important. It put hisCougars on the opposite side of the bracket from North AA championMarshall Academy.

    “Our objective, more than this winning this game, was to putMarshall and Central Private on the same side of the bracket.”

    Brock Smith, Brennan Miller, Gage Posey, Bubba Keene and MatthewEvans were named to the 12-member all-tournament team.

     Bowling Green defeatedSimpson Saturday for the South AA girls crown. Bowling Green edgedTrinity Episcopal 46-43 in the boys consolation game on alast-second shot.
