Loyd Star Hornets swat Jefferson Co.

The Loyd Star Hornets swept the Jefferson County Tigers in a pair of varsity baseball games Saturday at Smith Field.

     The Hornets shutout the Tigers 12-0 in the opener and blanked Jefferson County in the second game 10-0.

     “We are glad to get the wins,” said Loyd Star first-year coach Jared Britt. “I was pleased with the guys effort. Overall, I was disappointed that we left too many runners on base and that can not happen when we start our district action.”

     Loyd Star (5-2) resumes action Monday as they participate in Lawrence County’s Spring Break Tournament. The Hornets battle the McComb Tigers at 10 a.m. in Monticello.

Loyd Star 12, Jefferson Co. 0

     The Hornets quickly tamed the Tigers from Fayette in four innings of action.

     Junior right-hander Cori Crowe (2-1) pitched a no-hit shutout for the Hornets, collecting six strikeouts and allowed one walk.

     Rashard Bradley suffered the loss for Jefferson County with no strikeouts and seven walks.

     Sophomore centerfielder Seth Farmer was the offensive leader for the Hornets with a 2-run homer. Taylor Jones, Corey Funk, and Brendyn Brister contributed a double and a single apiece. Brandon Canny ripped three singles. Logan Smith had a double. Braden Smith and Crowe hit safely.

Loyd Star 10, Jefferson Co. 0

     The Hornets continued to dominate the Tigers in the second game as they quickly eliminated Jefferson County on a 10-rule in five innings of action.

     Junior Brandon Canny was the winning pitcher for the Hornets. He pitched a 2-hit shutout, collecting five strikeout and one walk.

     Devin Whittington absorbed the loss for the Tigers with two strikeouts and three walks. Loyd Star outhit the Tigers 10-2.

     Junior catcher Logan Smith provided the offensive firepower for the Hornets with a home run and a single. Josh Hodges continued the onslaught with two singles. Canny ripped a double. Hitting safely were Lane Smith, Jones, Farmer, Funk and Crowe.

     Jefferson County got singles from Princeton Dunbar and Whittington.
