Davis Insurance wins business honor

Peace of mind is often hard to come by with the rate that things happen in today’s world. But for some people, providing peace of mind is their specialty.

That’s exactly what the Davis family at Davis Insurance on Cherokee Street in Brookhaven does.

For their efforts, they have received the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business of the Month Award for March.

Just as it is now, Davis Insurance started as a family business with Wendell Davis at the top. Now they employ Davis’ two sons, Mark and Stephen, as well as Wendell Davis’ grandson, Ben Davis.

The business has been in Brookhaven since 1978.

“We started in a little house that I had arranged for us,” said Wendell Davis. “But after six months we moved into an office and have grown ever since.”

Davis Insurance provides all types of insurance, including life, home, auto, business and flood among others and has clients as far away as Jackson, McComb, Natchez and Magnolia, as well as a few in Louisiana.

“We still do 98 percent of our business right here in Mississippi,” said Davis. “But we’ve grown so much over the years that we now even have a 1-800 number.”

Davis Insurance is an independent insurance agency, so it can look for the best possible deal for a client to fill any need.

“Some people come in with a poor driving record and some insurers won’t want to cover them,” said Davis. “So we’ll work with them and find them the best possible deal on their insurance that we can.”

Davis said the secret to success is not complicated.

“We try to give great service,” said Davis. “I’d say the majority of our clients come from referrals from current clients. We try to treat them right and we think if we do they’ll come back.”

Some insurance companies are difficult to find when something happens to what they insure, but when Hurricane Katrina came through the area, Davis Insurance was there.

“I think every business in Brookhaven had a claim,” said Davis. “We must have been here night and day then, but we did it. We had to get a generator in order to work with them, but we were happy to.”

Wendell Davis said there is a possibility of expanding and opening a branch at some point in the future, but he knows that Brookhaven will always be home.

“Brookhaven has been so good to us and we’re fortunate to have started our business here and run it here for so long,” said Davis. “We’ve never had a need to leave and go somewhere else.”
