National Library Week is April 9-14, and to celebrate, the Friends of the Library have a big week planned at the Lincoln County Public Library.

     Pam Womack, president of Friends of the Library, said the fun begins on Monday and lasts all week.

     Monday will feature a book sale that will continue through Saturday.

     “We have several thousand of different kinds of books for sale,” said Womack. “Items for sale will range from gardening and cookbooks to current novels and history collections. There’s something for everyone. The prices will be great and will range from 50 cents up to a few dollars.”

     Tuesday will be Thank Your Library Staff Day and the library will have a “Get Carded Here” drive to encourage people to get their library card.

     “The library would like for everyone in the community to have their own library card instead of sharing them among family,” said Womack. “That’s why we’re asking everyone to renew or get a card, especially junior high and high school students, because you can’t use a computer without a library card.”

     A silent auction will begin on Wednesday and run through Saturday at 4 p.m. with a variety of items for sale. The last bid will be taken about 3:45 on Saturday.

     The auction will include five of the old card catalogs, many donations from merchants around Brookhaven, a pair of reading lamps from J. Allen’s, gift certificates and much more, according to Womack.

     “We know the funding for the library is limited,” Womack said. “It’s the one place in the area where everyone is welcome as long as they’re open. There’s so much information there and it’s a great things to support.”

     Saturday afternoon will feature children’s story hour for pre-school through fourth grade at 2:30, and a scavenger hunt for grades five through eight will begin at 2:30.

     A party will commence at 3:30 and last until 5 p.m. with refreshments and door prizes and will feature the announcement of the silent auction winners.

     “We hope to have a huge crowd for the party and to hear the silent auction winners announced,” said Womack.

     This year is the first time the weeklong events are being held at the library, but Womack hopes to see them continue into the future.

     “We’re doing everything we can this year in our first year,” said Womack. “We hope to grow even bigger next year as we’re really excited to be able to do this. We just want everyone to come out and celebrate the library.”

     The Friends of the Library will be taking donations for the library during the week.

     “Everything we do is for the library 100 percent,” Womack added. “We do it all as volunteer work.”
