McComb sinks Lady Panthers

The McComb Lady Tigers managed to hold off the error-prone Brookhaven Lady Panthers for a big 10-8 victory in Region 4-5A softball action Monday at Ole Brook softball complex. It concluded a game that was halted by rain last Tuesday.

     “This was a big win for us,” said McComb coach Cody Hall, a West Lincoln graduate. “Overall, this game wasn’t pretty but our girls fought hard and did the thing needed to win.”

     The Lady Panthers (11-6, 2-2) invade Pearl today to battle the Lady Pirates in another huge region test. Game time begins the junior varsity at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6.

     The Lady Tigers (9-6, 2-1) return home to host Ridgeland.

McComb 10, Brookhaven 8

     The Lady Panthers and Lady Tigers continued where they left off with the score tied at 2-all in the third inning with one out and a runner on second.

     The Lady Tigers capitalized on the opportunity and quickly scored 3 runs to grab a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the third, the Lady Panthers fought back into the contest as they trimmed the lead to 5-4.

     Ole Brook and McComb battle back and forth through the rest of the contest. The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Panthers 5-4 in the finals frames. The Lady Panthers could not overcome eight crucial errors. McComb had 3 errors.

     Kamry Creel was the winning pitcher for McComb with five strikeouts and one walk. Brook Hosick suffered the setback for Brookhaven with three strikeouts and no walks.

     The Lady Panthers outhit the Lady Tigers 13-8. Katherine Shell directed Ole Brook with a double and two singles. Christen Benson contributed a home run and a single. Shelby Peavey and Katie Grace Culpepper hit two single apiece. Shelby Case ripped a double. Hitting safely were Ivy Smith, Taylor Murray and Hosick.

     “It is hard to win when you make mistakes,” said Brookhaven coach Chad Walker.

     Leyton Terrell was the offensive leader for the Lady Tigers with a double. Destiny Brown, Kaylin Coney, Breann Talbert, Katie Kalusche, Bethany Davis, Paige Brock and Creel hit safely.
