Cathedral Green Wave gets title over Lady Cats

BOGUE CHITTO – The Natchez Cathedral Lady Green Wave captured the Region 7-1A title after defeating the Bogue Chitto Lady Cats 6-3 Thursday night in softball action.

     “I am very proud of the girls for winning the district championship,” said Cathedral coach Gary Blackwell. “We knew coming in that it would be a battle. Bogue Chitto is really good and they are well coach. We were fortunate to get the hit when we needed it.”

     Softball fans gathered to witness a tough matchup as the Lady Cats and Lady Green Wave fought for the district championship.

     Cathedral struck first in the opening inning to set the tone early when they pushed across one run for a 1-0 lead.

     Bogue Chitto bounced back in the bottom of the third inning to grab the lead 2-0.

     In the top of the fifth inning, the Lady Green Wave managed to take advantage of some of BC’s mistakes to load the bases. Cathedral’s shortstop Ginny Daggett provided the dagger as she smashed a grand slam home run over the right center fence to gain a 5-2 lead for the Lady Green Wave. BC committed five errors to Cathedral’s four.

     In the seventh, Cathedral added another run for insurance.

     In the bottom the sixth and seventh innings, the Lady Cats fought hard to rally back but fell short. BC could only score one run in the final inning as Cathedral made some key defensive stops for the win.

     Mollie Devening was the winning pitcher for the Lady Green Wave with three strikeouts and three walks. Rheagan Welch suffered the setback for the Lady Cats with four strikeouts and three walks.

     Daggett was the offensive leader for Cathedral with the grand slam. Beth Fortenberry contributed a double and two singles. Devening ripped a double. Hitting safely were McKenzie Milligan and Tori Edwards.

     Mattie Avants paced Bogue Chitto’s offense with three singles. Alana Nettle and Daley Roberts hit safely.

     “Hats off to Cathedral; they earned it,” said BC coach Scott Leggett. “Ginny Daggett stepped up big to win it for them.”

     In JV action, Bogue Chitto shut out Cathedral 8-0. Christian Black pitched the win for the Lady Cats with six strikeouts and one walk.

     Earlneshia Dillon and Jonna Savioe directed BC’s offense with two singles apiece. Zariah Matthews hit a double. Lauren Wallace and Cherie Savioe singled.
