Schools facing questions over student transfers

Student transfers and construction were the main topics of the Lincoln County School Board at their meeting Monday night.

Lincoln County Superintendent of Education Terry Brister said he’s been getting a large amount of interest from students in neighboring counties inquiring about transferring into Lincoln County Schools for next school year.

Brister said they would take on additional students if they have the space, but he is not yet sure how much space they’ll have for the 2012-13 school year.

“Space and teacher units will decide how many transfers we allow in,” Brister said.

Brister said he does expect enrollment to go up in the fall, but he’s not sure how much.

Also, Brister mentioned at the meeting that he’s been getting questions and comments from the public about the status of the new gymnasiums to be built in the county. New gyms are planned at Bogue Chitto and Enterprise, and renovations are expected to be done at Loyd Star.

He said people are beginning to doubt that they will actually be built. But Brister said the school board is waiting on the architects to finish and things will go from there.

“People are concerned that we’re not going to follow through on our plans, but we are,” Brister said. “Nothing will stop these plans from coming together.”

The gymnasiums will take approximately a year to complete once construction begins.

The school board also voted to approve naming the softball field at Loyd Star and the baseball field at Enterprise.

The Enterprise field will be named after Brister, who said he was humbled and honored by the gesture.

“It means a great deal to me and it was not something that I expected,” Brister said.

The Loyd Star softball field will be named Jan Delaughter Field. Delaughter has been a longtime coach at Loyd Star.

Brister added there are many projects, some significant, that the school board has planned for the summer at schools around the county. He said further information about construction and improvements will come at the board’s next meeting on May 7.
