Lincoln County is in carnival mood this time of year, with warm weather and students finishing up spring semester.

That carnival atmosphere continues with the Hog Wild Festival Saturday in Railroad Park in downtown Brookhaven.

Organizer Mark Porter, chief of the Loyd Star Volunteer Fire Department, said the event has something for everyone.

“We will have a cookout event with chicken, ribs and biscuits,” he said. “There will also be vendors selling food and entertainment.”

There will be first and second place prizes for winners of the cooking competition and entertainment for kids and adults, with performances by Mickey Garon and Vonda Laird.

The festival is put on by the Lincoln County Volunteer Firefighters Association, which includes all eight volunteer fire departments in the county. Money raised will go toward equipment for fire trucks and firemen, according to Porter.

Festival setup starts Friday night and the event begins Saturday morning.

Also, there will be a cystic fibrosis walk Saturday morning. Signup is at 7 a.m. and the walk starts at 8 a.m.

The event is in its second year and Porter said they expect another strong year after the success they had last year.

“Last year things turned out very well for us and we expect things to be even better this year,” Porter said.

Porter said he does not see a problem with the Hog Wild Festival taking place at the same time as the Lincoln County Carnival at the civic center.

“I don’t expect any conflict with the carnival,” he said. “We start off Saturday morning, so I think it’ll work out well. People should be able to come out and have fun.”

Those interested in the cooking competition can sign up by contacting Porter at 601-757-1772 or Chris Reid at 601-757-6326 or go to homeseekersparadise.com page and apply there.

Porter said organizers plan to make the Hog Wild Festival a Lincoln County tradition.

“We plan to continue doing this in the future from every year on out,” he said.

Porter hopes a good crowd turns out in the support of their local volunteer fire departments.

“There will be plenty of food, entertainment and vendors there Saturday,” he said. “We’ll go until around 6 that evening.”
