A one-car accident early Friday resulted in the death of a Jayess man, officials said.

     The 911 call came into the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office at 12:33 a.m. about a car running off of Carmel New Hope Road and into a tree. Firefighters with the Monticello Volunteer Fire Department responded at 12:36 a.m.

     Two passengers were in the car at the time of the wreck.

     The driver, Luis Alberto Esquivel, 22, was killed, said Lawrence County Coroner Sidney Fortenberry. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

     Esquivel’s body was released to Wilson Funeral Home in Monticello.

     Fortenberry said a toxicology report will be sent off to check for impairment.

     The passenger, whose name was unavailable, suffered minor injuries and did not go to the hospital.
