A Lincoln County man was killed in a Sunday morning car accident after speeding through a law enforcement checkpoint on Heucks Retreat Road, officials said.

At about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Rodgi Allen, 32, of 4029 Athens Trail, failed to stop at a driver’s license checkpoint set up by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department at Heucks Retreat Road and Old Highway 51, said Sheriff Steve Rushing.

“The car approached them, got right before them and accelerated right on through,” Rushing said.

Allen proceeded to travel northeast on Heucks Retreat Road and ran off the left side of the road at the intersection of Clark Travis Lane, about four miles from the checkpoint, Rushing said.

Allen’s vehicle, a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass, struck a tree and ejected the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene about 2:54 a.m., said Lincoln County Coroner Clay McMorris.

Deputies did not pursue Allen because they lost sight of him after he sped through the checkpoint, Rushing said. Deputies traveled Heucks Retreat looking for sign of him and discovered his wrecked vehicle.

It’s unknown how fast Allen was driving when he sped through the checkpoint and when he later ran off the road.

An autopsy was performed Monday at the Medical Examiner’s Office in Jackson, McMorris said. The results will not be back for several days.

Allen had no outstanding warrants, Rushing said. As to why Allen did not stop at the checkpoint, Rushing said an investigation is ongoing.
