Man killed in Wednesday shooting

A Brookhaven man was shot and killed Wednesday evening and one suspect has been arrested and charged with murder, authorities said.

Marvin Desmond Brown Jr., 25, stood in a yard at 622 Congress St. when he was shot, Assistant Police Chief Bobby Bell said Wednesday. The shooting occurred about 7:21 p.m., according to Brookhaven Police Department incident reports.

Police arrested Kimbley Crimiel, 35, of Brookhaven, on West Congress Street later that evening and charged him with murder, said Police Chief Pap Henderson this morning.

Crimiel was booked into the Lincoln County Jail at 11:34 p.m. following questioning by authorities. He may be arraigned today, but details are currently unavailable.

Brown was pronounced dead at the scene at about 8:21 p.m. by Deputy Coroner Robert Tyler, said Coroner Clay McMorris.

Brown’s body was sent to the Medical Examiners office in Jackson for an autopsy today, McMorris said. Williams Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements, details of which are undecided as of today.

No other injuries have been reported as a result of the shooting.

The property where Brown was killed is at the corner of Congress Street and Linton Avenue and Bell said evidence indicates the shots were fired from or near 209 Linton Ave., which is about two property lots away.

Brown and Crimiel are both of disputed addresses.

Brown did not reside at the property where he was shot. McMorris said Brown’s primary address seemed to be the home of his parents on R.B. Trail in Brookhaven, but witnesses reported Brown had most recently been living in Bogue Chitto.

Crimiel is associated with two addresses, Henderson said.

One, 235 South Fourth St., is not believed to be current. Instead, police believe Crimiel had been staying at 209 Linton Ave., where the shots may have been fired from Wednesday night.

Witnesses reported hearing two shots, Bell said. He said details of the attack were thin Wednesday night.

“We don’t know what brought it on,” Bell said prior to Crimiel’s arrest.

Wednesday evening, police were preparing to tow a car parked at 209 Linton Ave. to be further searched.

As of today, with Crimiel in custody, authorities have not released further details of the shooting.

“This is still under investigation,” Henderson said.

A man who did not identify himself said he was with Brown at the time of the shooting and reported seeing the shooter flee into the house at 209 Linton Ave. The unidentified witness said he was a lifelong friend of Brown’s and knew of no reason for the attack.

“I guess he was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” the man said.
