BHS Lady Panthers taste victory over Lady Cobras

WESSON – The Brookhaven Lady Panthers captured their first win of the season as they shut out the Wesson Lady Cobras 5-0 Thursday night in softball action.
“The girls were more consistent at the plate tonight,” said Brookhaven coach Chad Walker. “I was very pleased with our defensive effort.”
The Lady Panthers (1-3) will be on the road Monday to face the Bogue Chitto Lady Cats. Junior varsity begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6.
The Lady Cobras (2-2) will return to action Tuesday, traveling to Monticello to face the Lawrence County Lady Cougars. Junior varsity begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6.
Brook 5, Wesson 0
Brookhaven and Wesson provided their fans with a strong defensive performance after the Lady Panthers pushed across one run to seize a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
In the seventh inning, the Lady Panthers would increase their lead as Taylor Murray and Christen Benson blasted a pair of two-run home runs to take a 5-0 lead and held off the Lady Cobras for the win.
Katie Grace Culpepper tossed the win for Brookhaven collecting one strikeout and one walk.
Hanna Brown suffered the setback for Wesson with one strikeout and no walks.
Benson led the Lady Panthers at the plate with a home run and a double. Murray contributed a home run and a single. Hitting safely were Katherine Shell, Rashana Stewart, Shelby Case and Danielle Batteast.
The Lady Cobras were led offensively with singles from Ashton Newman, Bailey Middleton, Sarah Robinson, Haley Chassion, Kaitlyn Smith and Brown.
“We played really well defensively, but we must do a better job hitting the ball,” said Wesson coach Jackie Johnson.
In JV action, Wesson defeated Brookhaven 12-8.
Cheyenne Gladden pitched the win for the Lady Cobras with one strikeout and one walk. Alycen Speaks absorbed the setback for the Lady Panthers with one strikeout and two walks.
Mary Beth Munn sparked Wesson’s offense with two doubles and a single. Amber Brinson and Anna Speights fueled the flames with a two singles apiece. Olivia Allen, Skye James, Sabria Green, Abby Meredith, Brooke Page and Aurianna Vaughn hit safely.
Tia Bussey was the offensive leader for the Lady Panthers with two singles. Hitting safely were Angel Haynes, Chantel Quarles, Jada Henderson, Mary Parker Jackson and Rylie Allen.
