A Brookhaven Street Department employee died Wednesday morning after suffering a heart attack while on duty, officials said.
Ronnie Heathcock, 39, was pronounced dead of natural causes at 9 a.m. at King’s Daughters Medical Center, said Lincoln County Coroner Clay McMorris.
Shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday, a passer-by reported seeing Heathcock slumped over in his truck, McMorris said. Heathcock’s truck was near the intersection of North Street Drive and Center Street.
“He pulled the city truck over to the side of the road,” McMorris said.
Heathcock was a 13-year employee with the city.
Street Department Superintendent Wilmer Butler said Heathcock was responsible for street signs and was checking those in the area when the incident happened. Butler recalled Heathcock as a good employee who was committed to his work.
“He was one of the best workers the city ever had, I think,” Butler said.
Funeral services for Heathcock are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at Riverwood Family Funeral Service, with burial in Riverwood Memorial Park. Visitation is Friday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
