A Louisiana man was killed in a one-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 55 South, authorities said.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Staff Sgt. Rusty Boyd said troopers responded to the accident near the 37-mile marker at 12:25 p.m.
Earnest H. Burton, 77, of Metairie, La., was driving a 2008 Ford pickup that went off the road on the left side of the interstate and into the median. The vehicle slid sideways and collided with a tree on the left side of the truck.
Burton was wearing a seatbelt. The Jaws of Life were needed to remove him from the truck, Boyd said.
Burton was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday by Lincoln County Deputy Coroner Robert Tyler.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, Boyd said.
