A man remained in custody Tuesday in connection with a Sunday shooting that local authorities are still investigating.
Capatrick D. Mitchell, 20, of 842 Howard Road, was shot in the chest Sunday morning at a home on Center Street, said Police Chief Pap Henderson.
A suspect has been arrested. Joshua Henry Witherspoon, 24, turned himself into authorities Monday, Henderson said. The arrest report indicated his address at 211 Avalon St., but jail records listed his residence at 1045 Rance Drive.
Witherspoon was charged with aggravated assault and remains in jail. No bond has been set, Henderson said.
Mitchell was transported to Jackson for medical treatment and remained there Tuesday, but Henderson did not have the latest information on his status.
“Any time you’re shot it’s serious,” Henderson said, though he indicated encouraging signs. “He was conscious, he was talking. Everything seemed to be headed back good.”
BPD received a call about the shooting about 10:15 a.m. Sunday. The incident occurred on Center Street at a home that was not the residence of either Mitchell or Witherspoon, but much of what happened remains unknown.
“There’s a still a lot we’re trying to put together on this,” Henderson said.
Henderson said there are some leads on the motives of the shooting, including reports of a prior altercation, but nothing definitive yet.
