Fred Trevillion showcased his talent and versatility last Friday night. Brookhaven’s leading receiver changed positions, moved to quarterback and directed the Panthers to a 31-6 triumph against the Jackson Wingfield Falcons in Region 3-5A play. He passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more on King Field.

     That performance has earned Trevillion The DAILY LEADER’s Offensive Player of the Week recognition. He was subbing for injured senior quarterback Zach Smith who was sidelined by a concussion.

     Ole Brook head coach Tommy Clopton recognized Trevillion’s athletic skills. “Fred has worked very hard to improve his strength and his speed. He’s got a quick first step and a good vertical leap which helps him go get the ball,” as a receiver.

     Trevillon (6-3, 190, jr.) threw touchdown passes of 44 yards to tight end Genoa Sartin and 27-yards to running back Justin Blue in the Wingfield game. He also ran 2 and 69 yards for touchdowns, gaining 101 yards on 9 carries.

     Clopton said Trevillion is fun to coach. “Fred is very respectful to his coaches and teachers. He’s a, ‘Yes, sir; no, sir’ type of guy. One of his biggest assets is his competitive drive.”

     His calm demeanor cloaks an intense, competitive spirit. He and Smith help each other out in practice and in games.

     “Zach knows a little bit more about quarterback than I do,” said Trevillion. “We do battle it out sometimes in practice. Competition is good.”

     How good can the Panthers (2-2, 1-0) be this year?

     “We plan on getting better each week,” answered Trevillion. “We want to win the region.”

     The Panthers face a strong region test Friday night when they visit the McComb Tigers.

     Trevillion didn’t play football until his sophomore year at BHS. He concentrated on basketball  and kept his grades up as a freshman. He’s an honor roll student.

     “Tenth grade was the first time for me to play football,” said Trevillion. “I worked out with the team in the spring and the summer.”

     He caught a touchdown pass from Smith in his first varsity game in the 2011 opener at Lawrence County. His 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash and his leaping ability make him a primary target.

     “I love football,” Trevillion admitted. “I haven’t found anything better. I enjoy being on the team. It’s like a big family.”

     The 17-year-old son of Fred and Stephanie Trevillion is an honor roll student who likes math best. He has a brother, Javontae, who is a junior wide receiver. Younger sister Destiny is an eighth grade member of the BHS fastpitch softball team.

     “Our offensive line works hard,” said Trevillion. “They listen and learn. We try to play the way we practice.”

     Working in Brook’s offensive line are center Greg McNulty right tackle Rashun Smith, right guard Anthony Wilson, left guard Joey Williams and left tackle B.J. Robinson.

 

     In his spare time, Fred likes playing video games and tossing the football around with his brother. His favorite food is a McDonald’s Quarter-pounder. His mother’s banana pudding and peach cobbler are his favorite desserts.

     Trevillion said he enjoys playing for Clopton. “Coach Clopton is pretty hard on us. He wants everything right. He wants what is best for the team. He is all about the team.”

     On Sunday’s, Trevillion faithfully follows the Carolina Panthers and quarterback Cam Newton. His favorite college team is Alabama.
