He was a member of Central Baptist Church. Even though sustaining a life altering injury at a very early age, Joe never allowed his physical condition to inhibit his hobbies and goals as an avid outdoorsman. Joe set an example for anyone who met him, a fine example for each of us to live by. He never asked, “Why me?” or complained at any time. He always maintained a positive attitude and lived his life to the fullest. He gave credit to his Almighty God, his loving wife who took care of him and him of her, as well, and he loved his family and left them with an incredible legacy of which to live by.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Ted, William Thomas “Tinker” and Samuel “Bud” Newsom; and sisters, Ruth Pepper, Marie Evans, Barbara Boutwell, Sarah Calcote and Ruby Thornhill.

Survivors are his wife, Margarette Travis Newsom; daughter, Renee Newsom Pope; sisters, Fay Hibbard and Pauline Lambert; and two grandchildren, Carly Renee Rhoads and Caden Lane Pope.
