West Lincoln sweeps Loyd Star in twinbill

Senior forward Lucas Burris pumped in 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead four players in double figures as West Lincoln thumped the Loyd Star Hornets 68-47 Tuesday night in Jack Case Gymnasium.

     In girls action, the Lady Bears outscored the Lady Hornets 25-12 in the second half to prevail 39-29.

     West Lincoln continues action Thursday. The Bears invade Meadville to battle the Franklin County Bulldogs. The junior varsity girls tipoff at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity girls at 6 and boys at 7:30.

     Loyd Star will take the rest of the week off before returning to action Tuesday at Bogue Chitto. The girls tip off at 6, followed by the boys.

W. Lincoln 39, L. Star 29

      The Lady Bears and Lady Hornets battled through a physical first half. Loyd Star held a 17-14 lead at the half.

     Senior guard Katie Hester sparked West Lincoln (2-0) with a game-high 15 points. Tamasha Buckley led the Lady Bears on the boards with 6 rebounds and scored 8 points.

     “In the first half, both teams struggled to score,” said West Lincoln coach Lane Young. “In the second half, we made the adjustments needed offensively to get ahead and played tough defense to keep Loyd Star off balance.”

     Megan Givens was the leading scorer for Loyd Star (1-1) with 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.

W. Lincoln 68, L. Star 47

     The Bears (2-0) roared to a 20-7 lead in the first quarter and cruised into halftime with a 34-14 lead,

     In the second half, Loyd Star and West Lincoln battled back-and-forth. The Hornets managed to change the tempo of the game to slow down the Bears.

     WL senior guard Jared Case and junior center Sam Bivens contributed 15 points apiece. Duane Marshall provided 12 points. Case gathered 9 rebounds, 7 steals and 7 assists.

     “We are a fast-tempo team and Loyd Star did a good job slowing us down,” said Young. “In the first half, we came out strong. In the second half, Loyd Star changed our tempo. We ended up playing selfish ball and did not defend.”

     Loyd Star (1-1) had two players score in double figures as senior forward Terion Williams paced the Hornets with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Edrick Alsworth provided 15 points and 11 rebounds.

     “The guys played hard and hustled,” said Loyd Star coach Gene (Moochie) Britt. “Overall, we missed to many easy shots and free throws that could have made the game closer. This is a great learning experience for us to get better for the season.”

     Britt’s team only made 11 of 24 freethrows.

     In junior high action, Loyd Star swept West Lincoln.

     The Lady Hornets defeated the Lady Bears 32-22. Makenzie Smith pumped in 10 points to lead Loyd Star. West Lincoln was led in scoring by Sara Jane Doty and Lillianne Rushing with 6 points apiece.

     In boys action, The Hornets surpassed the Bears for a 36-32 victory.

     Zacchaeus Arnold paced Loyd Star with 18 points. Willie Logan contributed 13 points.

     LaDarrius Jones directed West Lincoln’s offense with 13 points. Seth Bivens had 9 points.
