For almost five decades of Dan Brown’s adult life, he has been looking out for the three C’s of children, church and community.

     And humble though he may be, recognition of Brown’s dedication continues to come his way.

     “Kindness, generosity, responsibility, strong family values …”

     Those words were expressed about Brown, then a principal at Alexander Junior High School, in 1994 when he was chosen as The Daily Leader’s “Citizen of Year.”

     Thursday night, close to 20 years later, similar words were uttered about Brown. He remains deserving of all of them.

     Brown has not stopped caring for children, his church and his community.

     Following a career in education that spanned around 40 years, Brown transitioned to a spot on the Brookhaven School District board of trustees.

     Whether in one of the board’s formal leadership positions or not, Brown has remained a steadfast voice in wanting the best for the district and believing it has the best to offer students.

     Over the years, one of Brown’s greatest interests has been in the area of student transfers. Students wanting to come into the district received a welcome vote of approval from Brown, but those looking to leave the district could count on a “nay” vote from the man.

     A number of years ago, Brown was instrumental in the formation of ROTAP, which stands for Reaching Out To All People. A group of local men serve as mentors to young students and encourage them to grow up to become respectful and responsible adults.

     Brown’s church life now sees him serving as administrator at St. James M.B. Church.

     Helping children, seeking the best education possible for them, faithfully serving his church and striving to bring about a better community have been hallmarks of Dan Brown’s life.

     In 1994, one person recalled the physically large size of Brown’s hands, only for them to be overshadowed by the size of his heart.

     Big hands, big heart. Brown still has both.
