DEXTER – The Wesson Cobras finished in third place in the boys bracket of the Dexter Christmas Tournament. The Cobras crushed the West Marion Trojans 84-66 in Saturday night action. In Friday’s results, the South Pike Eagles edged Wesson 74-72.

     In girls action, The Lady Cobras suffered two setbacks, falling to the West Marion Lady Trojans 57-40 Saturday night and to the South Pike Lady Eagles 60-48 Friday night.

     Wesson returns to action Friday. They visit Bogue Chitto to play four games. Junior high starts at 4 and 5 p.m. The varsity girls tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys.

West Marion 57, Wesson 40

     Cilinda Brown provided a strong offensive showing for the Lady Trojans with a games-high 28 points.

     Hannah McCormick paced the Lady Cobras (8-9, 1-0) with a team-high 10 points and 5 rebounds.  Kayla Britt and Xzaviah James contributed 9 points apiece. Britt collected 6 steals.

     “We started the fourth quarter up two (points) and went in a hole,” said Wesson coach Rusti Magee. “The score is no indication of how tight the game really was. We had to foul and try to play catch-up during the fourth quarter. Having 31 turnovers didn’t help either.”

Wesson 84, West Marion 66

     The Cobras (11-6, 1-0) provided an offensive show for their basketball fans as four players scored in double figures. Kaleb Skinner pumped in a team-high 19 points to lead the team. Farrod Green netted a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds. Terry Brown chipped in a double-double performance of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Dartavious Dixon had 14 points.

     “We started off sluggish, but managed to get things rolling offensively,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman. “Overall, I was pleased with my guys’ efforts in the tournament.”

     Chris Starks paced the Trojans with a game-high 22 points. Jamar Come contributed 20 points. Chris Franklin and Frank Adams provided 10 points apiece.

South Pike 60, Wesson 48

     Azaria Smith was the offensive leader for the Lady Cobras with 15 points and 4 steals. Hannah McCormick contributed 13 points. Xzaviah James was the leader on the boards with 8 rebounds.

     “South Pike is a very athletic team,” said Magee. “We played well in the first, second, and fourth quarters but didn’t score the third quarter.”

     The Lady Eagles had three players reach double figures. Jacynta Stpter and Amber Harper paced South Pike with 12 points apiece. Jamaya Carter added 10.

South Pike 74, Wesson 72

     In an offensive slugfest, the South Pike Eagles escaped the Cobras with a slim victory.

     Derrick Horton directed the Eagles with a game-high 24 points.

     Terry Brown was the offensive leader for Wesson with 21 points. Patrick Lumley netted 15 points. Dartavious Dixon had 14 points and Farrod Green 10.
