WESSON – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves (10-2, 2-0) overcame a sluggish first half to howl past the Itawamba Lady Indians 62-48 Thursday night in JUCO basketball action at Graydon L. Mullen Gymnasium.

     In the men’s game, Co-Lin  (2-10, 0-2) came out of the gate on fire to capture their second win of the season and snap a 9-game losing skid with a 72-60 victory over the Indians.

     Co-Lin continues action Monday. They visit archrival Southwest for two South Division games. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30.

Co-Lin 62, Itawamba 48

     Sophomore forward Vintrice Briggs pumped in a team-high double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Wolves. Chanta Poole contributed 11 points. Tiffany Sims made 8 steals.

     “The girls played a good game,” said Co-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young. “We shot the ball really well from the field (46%) and we did OK  from the free throw line.

     “Several players (Briggs, Sims, Poole and Wright) had a good game tonight,” continued Young. “In spots we played really well offensively and defensively. Overall, this was a good win over a good team.”

     The Lady Indians (8-5, 2-0) had only one player  score in double figures. Sophomore guard TyNita Baker led with a game-high 20 points.

Co-Lin 72, Itawamba 60

     Sophomore guard Jay Case paced four Co-Lin players in double digits with 13 points. Chris Steverson and Tim Harrison netted 12 points apiece. Joseph Cunningham provided 10 points.

     “The guys played really well defensively,” said Co-Lin men’s coach Dennis Sims. “We made it difficult for Itawamba to run their offensive schemes. Overall, this was a tough, physical battle for both teams.

     “This was a good win for us,” continued Sims. “It snaps a 9-game losing skid and hopefully it will motivate our players more in practice and in games.”

     The Indians (8-5, 1-1) was led in scoring by Quintin Lee with a game-high 15 points. Tory Rice contributed 10 points.

     Co-Lin owned a 39-31 halftime lead.
