Nalty “Coot” Johnson

Funeral services for Nalty “Coot” Johnson, of Brookhaven, are noon on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Harmony Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Riverwood Family Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

     Visitation is Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon at the church.

     Mr. Johnson, 96, died Jan. 9, 2013, at his home. He was born in Mississippi on Oct. 27, 1916, to Ed and Evie Hemphill Johnson.

     He was a painter at Keystone and a member of Harmony Baptist Church, where he was an active deacon for 50 years. Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was the recipient of a Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, ATO Medal and APTO Medal.

     Preceding him in death were his parents; and 10 brothers and sisters.

     Survivors are his wife of 74 years, Elnora Foster Johnson; son, Ruben Johnson and wife, Betty; daughter, Fannie Mae Hemby and husband, James; six grandchildren, Virginia Hemby Grubb and husband, Skip, Phillip Hemby and wife, Donna, Melissa Hemby Barrios and husband, Frank, Robyn Johnson Smith and husband, Shane, Ben Johnson and wife, Susan, and Laura Johnson McDaniel and husband, Rod; 13 great-grandchildren, Tanner Hemby, Tara Paden, Matthew Jackson and wife, Katy, David Hedgepeth and wife, Megan, Brittney Ashley and husband, Jarrod, Leigh Taylor Smith, Jon Tyler Smith, Jacob Johnson, Will Johnson, Jenna Kate Johnson, Xander Johnson, Macy McDaniel and Braxton McDaniel; and four great-great-grandchildren.

     Memorials may be made to Harmony Baptist Church building fund.
