Wesson wins pair against Loyd Star

Wesson escaped Loyd Star with a sweep in Region 6-2A basketball action. The Lady Cobras notched a narrow 56-55 win in overtime and the Cobras rallied in the second half to edge the host Hornets 49-45.

The Lady Cobras (11-10, 4-2) battled Loyd Star (3-15, 1-7) to a 51-51 deadlock at the end of regulation. Thirteen points apiece by Azariah Smith, plus 4 steals and 2 assists, sparked the win. Jashia Smith chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds.

“We didn’t play a very good game and Loyd Star shot the ball well,” said Wesson coach Rusti Magee. “Azaria Smith hit clutch free throws to win it for us.”

The Lady Hornets got a game-high 17 points from Marcey Givens, including 4 treys. She also had 6 assists and 4 rebounds.

Julie Smith chipped in 13 points. Ruby McCullough pulled down 14 rebounds.

“My girls gave a great effort but we made some mistakes at the end of regulation and in overtime,” said Loyd Star coach Billy Vaughn. “That hurt us, but overall I was pleased.”

The Cobras (16-7, 5-1) maintained a share of the region lead but they had to erase a 14-point deficit. They trailed Loyd Star 32-22 at halftime.

Sparking the comeback was Farrod Green with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Mack Smith added 11 points and Terry Brown grabbed 7 rebounds.

“We came out extremely sluggish and played terribly on offense,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman. “We made several dumb mistakes and Loyd Star took advantage of them.

“I’m proud of my guys for not giving up,” Newman noted. “They played hard down the stretch and our quickness helped us create turnovers. Loyd Star played hard and they are well-coached.”

The Hornets (8-10) were paced by Terion Williams who scored a game-high 24 points and snatched 7 rebounds. Caleb Yarborough made 5 assists and 3 steals. Donavon Johnson grabbed 8 rebounds.

“We played real well for three and a half quarters,” said Loyd Star boss Moochie Britt. “We had some key turnovers. Our players played hard but we couldn’t put Wesson away.”

Wesson outscored the Hornets 25-13 in the second half.

JV Results

In the junior varsity girls game, Loyd Star beat Wesson 28-18, led by Toni Banks with 15 pints. Carlie Case scored 4 points for the Lady Hornets (5-1.

Wesson got 7 points from Tashay Glasper and 4 from Aurianna Vaughn.

In the JV boys game, Wesson shaved Loyd Star 46-42, sparked by Ryan Smith’s 12 points. Brad Jasper added 11 and Dorian Beard 7.

The Cobras got 20 points from Anthony Jones and 12 from Mack Smith.
