WESSON – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves howled past the Hinds Community College Lady Bulldogs 81-39 Thursday night in South Division JUCO basketball action in Graydon L. Mullen Gymnasium.

In men’s action, the Bulldogs rallied to force overtime and outscored the Wolves 14-8 to secure a 76-70 victory as Co-Lin committed 30 turnovers.

Co-Lin continues action Monday. They visit the Pearl River Wildcats for two South Division games. The women tipoff at 5 p.m., followed by the men at 7.

Co-Lin 81, Hinds 39

The Lady Wolves (13-3, 4-1) came out sluggish to start the game and trailed the Lady Bulldogs 4-0 with 16:00 remaining. Co-Lin fought back with an 10-3 run to claim a 10-7 lead with 13:50.

The Lady Wolves’ defense sparked a huge offensive explosion in the first half. Co-Lin went into halftime with a comfortable 40-23 lead.

In the second half, Co-Lin continued their scoring onslaught and feasted on the Lady Bulldogs. Everyone on the Lady Wolves got involved on the scoring spree as Co-Lin outscored Hinds 41-16.

Sophomore forward Vintrice Briggs led Co-Lin’s offensive scoring with 12 points. Tiffany Sims was the leader on the boards with 6 rebounds.

“This was a good win,” said Co-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young. “We shot the ball really well on offense and our defense created turnovers. I was pleased to give everyone some playing time.”

Two freshmen were the offensive leaders for the Lady Bulldogs. Guard Laporshia Mitchell and forward Mozetta Greenwood paced Hinds with 8 points apiece. Greenwood led on the boards with 7 rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs (2-14, 1-4) are coached by Micherln Smith.

Hinds 76, Co-Lin 70, OT 

The Wolves and Bulldogs provided a tough, physical battle for their basketball fans.

In a see-saw contest in the first half, Co-Lin took a 34-30 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the battle continued. The Wolves (3-13, 1-4) managed to increase their lead to 8-points with 7:00 left.

The Bulldogs (11-4, 2-3) rallied to tied the game at 56-all with 2 minutes to play. In a back-and-forth battle both teams traded baskets.

With 8 seconds remaining and the score tied at 62-all, the Wolves had the final possession for the last shot. After a timeout, sophomore guard Tim Harrison received the in-bound pass. He drove to the right baseline for the game-winning shot, but sailed over the rim as the buzzer sound.

In overtime, Hinds came out energized and outscored the Wolves 14-5 to escape with the win.

The Wolves had four players to score in double figures. Harrison led Co-Lin with 22 points. Lamar Williams contributed 14 points and was the leader on the boards with 11 rebounds. Chris Steverson scored 11 of his 12 points in the first half. Fred Fairman netted 10 points.

“You can not win, when you give up 30 turnovers,” said Co-Lin men’s coach Dennis Sims. “We held several leads and allowed Hinds to stay in the game with poor play and turnovers. In my 17 years at Co-Lin, this year is a tough pill to swallow.”

Marcus Hurn, a 6-foot sophomore guard from Meridian, was the offensive leader for the Bulldogs with 18 points. Greg Lee provided 16 points and Josh Gaskin had 14.
