Senior forward Lucas Burris pumped in a game-high 19 points to lead four players in double figures as the West Lincoln Bears hammered the St. Aloysius Flashes 81-38 in Region 7-1A action Friday night in Jack Case Gymnasium.

In girls’ action, the Lady Flashes rallied to edge the Lady Bears 33-31.

West Lincoln continues region action Tuesday. They host the Hinds AHS Bulldogs for three games. The junior varsity boys tip off at 5 p.m. The varsity girls start at 6, followed by the boys.

St. Al 33, W. Lincoln 31

The Lady Bears and Lady Flashes provided a defensive battle for their basketball fans in the first quarter. West Lincoln commanded a 12-3 lead.

In the second quarter, the Lady Bears (9-13, 3-4) managed to overcome St. Al’s rally to lead 18-13 at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Flashes (9-10, 3-4) came out strong and outscored West Lincoln to take a 24-21 lead after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears fought back to outscore the Lady Flashes 10-9, but fell short in the closing seconds.

Junior forward Destiny Allen was the offensive leader for the Lady Bears with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Tamasha Buckley contributed 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.

“We did not come ready to play,” said West Lincoln coach Lane Young. “We were flat for the entire game. We did not execute our offense. Overall, I am disappointed on the way we played.”

Ann Garrison Thomas was the top scorer for the Lady Flashes with a game-high 12 points. Ellie Welp was the leader on the boards with 5 rebounds.

“This was a ugly win, but we will take it,” said St. Aloysius coach Cookie Johnson. “We struggled to get things going offensively all night, but our defense was great. Overall, I am pleased with my girls effort to keep fighting for the win.”

W. Lincoln 81, St. Al 38

The Bears came out and gave their basketball fans plenty of excitement on offense. West Lincoln hammered the Flashes 27-5 in the first quarter and took a commanding 47-9 lead into halftime.

In the second half, West Lincoln (21-2, 5-0) continued their scoring onslaught as they jolted the Flashes for a 68-20 lead in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, St. Aloysius (8-10, 2-6) outscored the Bears 18-13 as reserves mopped up.

Freshman Ke-Shaun London helped lead the Bears with 15 points. Duane Marshall netter 14 points. Tamarcus London provided 11 points. Burris collected 8 rebounds to lead West Lincoln on the boards.

“This was a good win,” said Young. “It was great to give everyone some playing time. Now, we must get ready for a test Tuesday that will decide first or second place in district.”

Luke Eckstin directed the Flashes’ offense with a team-high 9 points. John Tillman Thomas led on the boards with 5 rebounds.

“We did not come ready to play,” said St. Aloysius coach Delvin Thompson. “Our guys played flat and gave no effort. We cannot win if no one tries.”
