Williams sparks Hornets over East Marion Eagles

Terion Williams pumped in 26 points and the Loyd Star Hornets held off East Marion’s Eagles 60-55 Friday night in Region 7-2A basketball. Edrick Alsworth chipped in 15 points.

In the varsity girls game, East Marion posted a 31-25 victory over the Lady Hornets.

Loyd Star resumes region play Tuesday at Enterprise. The junior varsity girls tip off the 4-game series at 4 p.m.

The Hornets (9-10, 2-3) got 10 rebounds from Williams. Edrick Alsworth scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Tobias Dillon had 4 steals and Donavon 3. Yarborough made 4 assists.

“Terion had his best game of the season,” said Loyd Star coach Moochie Britt. “We played really well until the last three minutes of the game, when we got in foul trouble. East Marion is real quick and has a lot of depth.

“My bench did a good job coming in,” Britt added. “I was proud of the way we played.”

Seventeen points by Shavonte Coleman led the Eagles.

 The Lady Hornets (3-16, 1-5) got 14 points and 5 rebounds from freshman guard Julie Smith. They got 7 rebounds from Ruby McCullough and Raigin Smith 6. Marcey Givens had 5 rebounds.

McCullough made 4 steals and Julie Smith 3. Givens had 5 assists and 3 steals.

“We were only seven for 36 shooting the ball in the lane,” said Loyd Star coach Billy Vaughn. “We missed a bunch of free throws, too,” going 7-for-24 at the charity stripe.

East Marion was led by Audrianna Howard’s 12 points.

Jr. Varsity Results

In the JV boys game, Loyd Star beat the Eagles 49-17, led by Levi Redd’s 13 points. Lane Rogers chipped in 10 points, Brad Jasper 8 and Javion Beard 6.

East Marion got 7 points from 6-foot-5 eighth grader Keyshawn Feazell.
