Bassfield sacks Hornets

Bassfield’s Yellowjackets authored a fourth-quarter comeback and escaped Loyd Star with a 55-51 Tuesday night win in Region 7-2A basketball action. Bassfield, seeded No. 1 in the region, got 13 points from Desmond Hammond and 10 from Jeffery Smith.
Bassfield beat Loyd Star 63-37 in the varsity girls game, paced by Janesha Booth’s 13 points.
Loyd Star resumes play Friday at East Marion, starting with a JV boys game at 5 p.m. East Marion will host next week’s region tournament at Foxworth.
The Hornets (11-11, 4-5) got 18 points from Terrion Williams and 14 rebounds from Donovan Johnson. Caleb Yarborough chipped in 11 points, 3 assists and 2 steals. Edrick Alsworth had 10 points and 6 rebounds.
Tobias Dillon had 5 assists and 4 steals for Loyd Star.
The Hornets carried a 42-38 into the fourth quarter. They were outscored 18-9 in the last 8 minutes of the game.
“We slowed it down to keep Bassfield out of sync,” said Loyd Star coach Gene Britt. “Our kids gave a great effort. We outplayed them everywhere but the scoreboard.”
Britt’s boys led 22-20 at halftime.
