Bogue Chitto girls win 200th for Terrell

PINEY WOODS – Seventeen points by freshman guard Christian Black led five players in double figures and Bogue Chitto’s Lady Cats cruised to a 77-51 Thursday night win over the Piney Woods girls in Region 7-1A basketball action. Rheagan Welch chipped in 12 points, Zoriah Matthews and Adrienne Wallace 11 apiece and Earlnesheia Dillon 10 as BC coach Christi Wallace realized her 200th career victory.

In the boys game, the Tornadoes buried Bogue Chitto’s Bobcats 88-27, powered by 6-foot-9 Ole Miss signee Dwight Coleby.

Bogue Chitto celebrates Senior Night tonight in R.L. “Bob” Calhoun Gymnasium. Activities begin at 5:30 with senior recognition.

There will be a special ceremony in the 60-year old facility, recognizing BC’s eight state championship teams from 1952, 1965, 1966, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993 and 1995, plus the Grand Slam team.

The Lady Cats (22-5, 7-2) got 10 rebounds from Black. Matthews handed out 10 assists and Wallace 8. Dillon had 5 steals as BC raced to a 38-26 halftime lead.

Terrell, a BC alumnus, is in her ninth year at the helm. Her team is seeded No. 2 in next week’s Region 7-1A Tournament at Hinds AHS in Utica. They’ll play in Thursday’s semifinals.

“We shot the ball well and started pulling away in the second half,” said Terrell. “Our girls played hard and got the district win.”

The PW girls got a game-high 31 points from Kristen Kelly and 20 from Raven Thompson.

The Bobcats (5-21, 3-5) got 9 points from Zach Perkins. Coach Gareth Sartin’s team was down 47-10 at halftime.

The Piney Woods boys team has been placed on three years probation by the Mississippi High School Activities Association and is ineligible for the state playoffs.
