Brookhaven emergency responders helped escort a woman and child out of a home Sunday afternoon after high water surrounded the residence, officials said.
“The yard was flooded all around the house; in the front yard it was real swift water about knee deep,” said Brookhaven Fire Department Chief Tony Weeks. “A woman was on the front porch with her child.”
Brookhaven firefighters were dispatched to the house, 307 Minnesota St., about 4:20 p.m.
Firefighters helped walk the woman through the water in the front yard.
“She was scared if she tried to cross it, she might get knocked down and with the baby, that could have been bad,” Weeks said.
There was no water in the house, but the street was partially flooded in front of her residence.
The woman left the scene with someone waiting for her.
“She had somewhere else to go,” Weeks said.
The woman was never in any immediate danger, and Weeks called the assistance his department provided “fairly routine.”
Sunday’s storms also resulted in some damage in Lawrence County, where high winds brought down trees and blew off roofs, according to the county civil defense director, Robert Patterson.
The storm’s path primarily came through the Arm and Oakvale areas about 10 miles southeast of Monticello. Patterson said no injuries were reported. He was unable to say whether the damage was from a tornado.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency was assessing damage in Lawrence, Forrest and Lamar counties Monday and had not released further details on the Lawrence storm.
Patterson said at least four houses were damaged, two barns were blown down and a dog pen was flattened on G.W. Smith Road. In addition, a lightning strike left a large tree leaning toward a house on Forest Grove Road.
The storm that came through the G.W. Smith Road area passed through around 3:45 p.m. Sunday.
